Abstract
Introduction: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals often face significant stigma, social exclusion, and discrimination due to transphobia (Cicero et al., 2017). TGD youth are particularly vulnerable, experiencing higher rates of homelessness, substance abuse, and high-risk behaviours compared to peers (Rafferty et al., 2018). In response to these challenges, Skipping Stone Foundation (SSF) offers essential programs supporting TGD youth, adults, and families in Alberta. To meet growing demand for affirming care and evaluate the effectiveness of its services supporting TGD youth, this study conducted a needs assessment of SSF programs.
Methods: To support meaningful TGD youth engagement and incorporate lived expertise, our community partner, SSF, collaborated with us by involving a TGD youth advisor and five TGD youth consultants to develop a 45-minute semi-structured qualitative interview. In these interviews, TGD youth ages 12 to 24 (N = 31) shared their experiences with Skipping Stone’s programs. Transcripts were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach to identify codes and themes.
Results: Qualitative results highlight the suggested improvements, areas of growth, and identified gaps in SSF’s services.
Conclusion: The significance of this research extends beyond SSF, setting a precedent for community organizations to co-create effective support systems with marginalized populations. By addressing gaps in the literature and offering practical insights, this study highlights the importance of affirming environments in an effort to improve resilience and reduce mental health disparities among TGD youth.
