Malak Sadek
(He/Him)

Research Lab Coordinator

Malak is currently the Lab Coordinator for the TREC Lab. His passion for psychology emerged later in his academic journey. After earning a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in microbiology from McGill University, Malak made a bold shift in direction and returned to school to where he earned his BSc(Honours) in Psychology from University of Western Ontario. Over the past few years, Malak has developed extensive research experience through his work as a Research Assistant in multiple psychology labs. His research interests focus on understanding the factors that influence mental health, emotional regulation, and behavior in children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. He is also interested in exploring mental health barriers faced by diverse populations, including sexual, gender, and racial minority groups such as 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Malak aspires to pursue graduate studies in Clinical Psychology and become a registered psychologist, with a strong commitment to working with individuals across various age groups and promoting mental health equity within diverse communities.

What would you bring in your backpack if you were heading on a TREC (trek)?

  • A dangerous amount of the delicious Ice Capps from Tim’s (please tell me there’s a freezer)

  • Food, food, and then some more food—mostly chicken, pasta, cheese, and a downright reckless mountain of dessert. Fruits and Veggies? Yeah… probably not

  • Headphones because life sounds way better with music

  • My camera’s coming — can’t let those epic memories go undocumented!

We are thankful for the ability to live, work, and gather on this Land.

The TREC Lab recognizes we are gathered in an institution with a colonial history, and colonial present, and we aim to continually lessen ongoing colonial harms. We make this statement as an affirmation we are committed to improving our profession’s practices.

The members of the TREC Lab both acknowledge and pay tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6). The city of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina.
